Huge trucks hauled in tons of scrap metal to be pounded into blocks and melted down into ingots of aluminium or iron. The crumpled piles of cans witnessed to the city's love of soft drinks. The ubiquitous inescapable Coca-Cola brand still smiled through despite being crushed, mangled, ripped and shredded, it was only heat which would obliterate its mocking smile.
